Decorative Painting Tutorial: interesting backgrounds for your canvas

There are many different ways to decorate a blank canvas! As well as a blank page just waiting to be written, a canvas enables us to explore different ways, to learn many techniques… well, to free our creativity!
If you have already watched the tutorial about how to create a textured background, you are probably wondering: what’s next?

So, here is another Decorative Painting tutorial for you about how to use the color and create interesting backgrounds for your canvas.

The technique I use is very very simple, but it’s a bit strange because I don’t use any brush for this step! It’s weird isn’t it?

In this step you need to work quite fast, don’t worry about being perfect because there’s no need to…
I usually listen to some music, so I can just follow the flow without overthinking! 😊
While you lay down the paint, you can notice that the texture is really popping out! Of course, in this case the paint is more fluid and transparent, so it twill take you a couple of layers before you obtain the result you want.
It’s very important to wait that the first layer is completely dry before applying the second (or third) one.

You can also mix colors to create new tones, until you reach the effect that you want.

I used this technique for many of my Decorative Painting projects: Purple Beauty, Fall in Love and Snowflakes are kisses from Heaven (that by the way is a Free Pattern!)
So, do you want to try?
Here are just a few examples of what you can create on a blank canvas:

This is what you need

  • the color you want for your background (I always use DecoArt Americana paints)
  • drying time extender medium (by DecoArt Americana or another brand of your choice)
  • two pieces of fabric (two pieces of an old T-shirt work fine)

Keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be perfect!!! We are always talking about a background, so it’s something that needs to be around the main design, and the main design will actually be what will catch the eye.

Here is the Decorative Painting tutorial where I show you step by step how to do 😊

Well, you didn’t think it was that easy right? This Decorative Painting Tutorial is such a fun way to easily create interesting backgrounds for your canvas!
